Cresswell Family
Joel Cresswell( c: 1785) married Ann Burgess(c: 1750) on the 23 March 1806 in St Marys Parish Church Cheadle Cheshire both resided in the parish. So far James would appear to be only issue of this marriage. Later Joel's occupation is given as a soldier. No record found so far. James Cresswell was born in Portwood Stockport in 1807. Little is known of James early life. On his first married certificate his occupation is given as a Carter(white van man of his day) and he is living in Dickenson Street Toxteth the street he returned too when his first wife died. By the 1841 census he describes himself as a publican, but there is no record of a Pub he may have owned, could have been selling ales from his home in Great Rodny Street Toxteth. The site of this home is now the Toxteth Public Library site. By the 1851 census the family had moved to Back Whitfield Street, a back to back terraced house in a poorer district of Toxteth, he is now a labourer, could have worked on the docks which were very near to hand. By this time the Tarlton family had moved away, probably deceased by now. He died in 1888 in St Helens and is burried in the family plot.
